Our Story
Following the successful release of the 2017 pre-feasibility study – ‘Evaluating the potential to export Pilbara solar resources to the proposed ASEAN grid via a subsea high voltage direct current interconnector’ – commissioned by the Pilbara Development Commission, the authors of the study launched Pilbara Solar that same year.
The study examines the trends in cross border electricity trade, the South East Asian growth in electricity demand, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technology and the potential economic opportunities and benefits for Traditional Owners and the State of Western Australia. It also develops a scenario for the costs of solar, storage and HVDC engineering and the construction of a 3-gigawatt transmission from the north west of Western Australia to Indonesia.
The report, has since become highly regarded by experts in the energy industry and is regularly referenced in other research work.
Backed by a team of Australia’s leading clean energy experts, our goal is to deliver high quality renewable energy solutions while creating opportunities for involvement and equity ownership in our projects by Aboriginal people. This has been our foundation since the beginning.
Western Australia and the Pilbara has a vastly untouched and amazing solar resource – the top three in the world for being able to provide solar power generation, in terms of intensity and duration, and its close proximity to Asia makes it even more attractive.
Our aim is to develop clean energy solutions together with businesses to help them to reduce their carbon footprint. With all our projects, we strive for sustainable economic development that benefits Aboriginal people, business, government and the community.
Our ownership structure includes 50 percent ownership by Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC), a not-for-profit Aboriginal Corporation, and the native title representative body for over one million square kilometres in Western Australia’s Pilbara, Mid West, Murchison and Gascoyne regions. The other 50 percent is owned by our experts in renewable energy development.
Leading by example, we are here to encourage a high standard of corporate social responsibility and help businesses to make positive, lasting change.
